It's that time of year where we all sit back, and reflect on the good, and not so good of the previous 12 months. While taking time for serious introspection is helpful, I want to focus on something much more important. Food. But not just any food. I want to reflect on the dishes that truly stand out from a year of eating out, and traveling. I indulged in some amazing food this year, like the smoked turkey sausage from the Greenmarket Farmers Market, and velvety ice cream from Trickling Springs Creamery. It's impossible to highlight every bite I took, but when I think back on 2017, here are the dishes, snacks, plates, and desserts that immediately jump to the top of my mind.
Popcorn at Stella's Popkern
This food truck turned brick and mortar quickly became my go-to stop for all snacking needs. Unlike other specialty popcorn, Stella's has figured out how to keep their options flavorful, yet light. The standing list of flavors won't disappoint, but if you really want something spectacular, try one of the three specialty flavors offered each day. Better yet, try all three!
Onion rings at Brookland's Finest
David and I ventured out to this intimate neighborhood restaurant on a cold, and rainy evening in search of warmth and comfort, and we found some in the onion rings. Not only is each ring the size of a small Frisbee, but the tempura batter sets them far above the standard, and often too heavy, classic.
Cod fritters at Little Coco's
If I haven't told you how much I love Little Coco's already, now I am; another neighborhood gem serving unique, and high quality Italian food. Everything is delicious here, but I will gladly drop by any night for the cod fritters. These golden bites of perfection go heavy on the cod and potato filling, and skip the greasy after taste.
Saganaki at Kapnos
Fried cheese, enough said! But seriously, we ordered this dish not really knowing what it was, and it easily became our favorite plate of the meal. Warm, gooey, salty cheese, with a crispy outside, topped with honey and cooked cherries; what else is better?
Brussels sprouts at Federalist Pig
I know not everyone loves Brussels sprouts (mom), but they happen to be one of my favorite vegetables, and there is no better way to enjoy them then fried. Federalist Pig takes their frying skills up a notch with a magical, sweet and salty seasoning that makes me feel like I'm eating junk food.
Gelato at Rapa Nui in Buenos Aires
Life is better with gelato, and Rapa Nui made my life extra special during our recent trip to Buenos Aires. Yes, I can get good gelato in DC, but nothing quite this creamy. Plus, no one does dulce de leche quite like Argentina.
The Omar platter at King of Falafel
This small, yet inviting spot in Astoria, NY will make you think you are eating your lunch half-way around the world. I have no doubt that everything on the menu is amazing, but if you ever have the chance, order The Omar, which is a mix of chicken, lamb, onion, peppers, and tahini sauce, served over rice or salad. Just make sure to bring a huge appetite.
Chocolate chip muffin at Hu Kitchen
I stick to a Paleo diet most of the time, so muffins are typically a once a year kind of treat, so you can imagine my excitement when I visited Hu Kitchen in NYC, and found a 100% Paleo chocolate chip muffin! It's now become a must eat every time I visit the Big Apple.
Scallion pancake & peking duck at Panda Gourmet (pictured at the top)
I'll admit that DC isn't always the place you think of when considering great Chinese food, but Panda Gourmet is an exception. If you are looking for authentic Szechuan style cuisine, look no further; in particular, the crispy scallion pancake, and the perfectly fried peking duck. You'll want to go with a group though, portions are huge and ideal for sharing.
