Last year, I divorced my scale. I spent years weighing myself daily, if not multiple times a day (read more about that here). The reality on the scale each morning directly affected my mood; too much of my life revolved around a number. I ditched my parasitic sidekick as part of completing a Whole30 challenge last March. While I do not agree with 100% of Whole30, I do 100% support its focus on non-weight (or what they call non-scale) health goals. Whole30 does not require participants to physically throw away their scales, but I sensed too much temptation lurking beneath my bed each day. My scale went in the trash.
Have I weighed myself since March? Absolutely, but only once a week (if that), and only using the scale at the gym for consistency. And guess what? My world has not fallen apart. Instead of relying on a number to tell me how I feel, I actually tune in to what my body is telling me. Since throwing out my scale six months ago, here is what I have learned:
Here's what I am asking you to do this holiday season: ditch the scale.
Why? Because holidays, no matter which ones you celebrate, are about spending time with friends and family, and eating great food. I lie to myself each year thinking I will make it through the cookies, buttered mashed potatoes, and homemade breads unscathed. I am working hard to eat these foods in a reasonable and guilt-free way, but I'm living in a fantasy land if I think my weight won't fluctuate as I enjoy more than one holiday party. Stepping on the scale will only unravel the balance I am working toward.
If ditching the scale for 30 days brings on heart palpitations, or you start to feel your anxiety levels rising quickly, take a deep breath. Maybe 30 days isn't the best strategy for you this year, but perhaps you can commit to stepping on the scale only once a week instead.
Believe me, I know how it feels to base your personal value on a number; it's exhausting. I encourage you to take a few minutes to weight the pros and cons of joining me on this challenge, make a decision that works best for you, and have a wonderful holiday season regardless of what the scale does (or does not) say.
