You read that right. I'm not cooking this week, and I'm already feeling some freedom and relief in an otherwise chaotic schedule. No, I'm not going on a kitchen strike, but I am using this week of Passover to try something new. If you are not familiar with the dietary rules of Passover, here's a helpful guide, but in short, for one week those who celebrate follow rules that pretty much resemble a Paleo/Primal diet (except the Matzah part).
Here's the thing. I choose to follow a Paleo/Primal diet 90% of the time, so for me, there is little difference in my daily routine during the holiday. This may not pose a dilemma for some, but for me it does. I like to feel something different during holidays; a shift in routine that reminds me each day that it's not just any old Monday. A few years ago, I started experimenting with a few ideas to help re-establish Passover significance for myself.
This year, however, I was looking for something more. With added stress at work, and the additional hours I'm spending working for a local campaign, the idea of taking on even more responsibility this week was overwhelming.
So instead of creating more work in order to make this holiday feel special, I decided to walk in the opposite direction. I am putting a pause on my weekly menu planning, detailed grocery shopping, and nightly cooking for a few days. Don't worry though, the kitchen is well stocked with deli meats, canned tuna/salmon, eggs, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables for us to happily survive. This week is going to be about letting go of kitchen control, and reminding myself that every meal doesn't have to be a perfectly curated experience.
I've already used my extra time to write this post tonight, and plan on sneaking in a few extra yoga sessions later in the week. I love cooking, and making sure we are eating healthy, nutritious meals, but I also love coming home from work without a single obligation. If only just for one week.
